Is it possible to just stop the monthly notice that the maps are out of date id rather just update when i want to, with the updates being nearly the cost of a stick on sat nav

    Yes it is.

I can live with the updates being only once in every 28 days. Its the insistance on playing music at me irrespectively of whether I had it switched off the last time I used the car that I find such a shocking oversight on Garmin's part. Does everyone else's do that too?

That's quite a few button presses just to maintain a bit of quiet. Every other stereo ever built remembers whether it was off or not, why's it so hard for Garmin to get right...

Finally discovered a sort of solution to this (contacting Garmin was no help); turning the volume down to nothing. Still not ideal but it is at least easier than navigating to the Aux input to not have music played at you when you next start the car.
